Murdered by son-in-law, John Phillips.

Sometime ca 1860 to 1863 James and Anna went to Iowa, where James had a brother and Anna a sister, then they lived briefly in Kansas, Texas and Arkansas, finally locating in the Indian Territory.

In 1889 James and his son Fred participated in the Run at the first great land opening. They were unsuccessful, but James bought a claim on the spot, located a short distance east of where the State Capitol now stands, which he gave up after a struggle of several years.

After Anna's death James operated a grocery store and P. O. near Keokuk Falls. On December 20, 1901, James was shot to death from ambush by John Phillips, second husband of his daughter Lizzie. John Phillips had told neighbors he blamed James for the breakup of his marriage. John later killed himself.
