At 12 years of age he moved with his family to their farm in Hermantown. Herb attended school in Proctor where he enjoyed playing football. He joined the Coast Guard and sailed the Great Lakes until he joined the Merchant Marines during World War II. Herb attended officers training school in new London, Conn. and he completed his service as 1st Lt.
Herb retired from the DM&IR Railway in 1983. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He served as High Priest in the Commandery in 1968-1969. He was a member of the AAD Temple, All American Club, 125th Field Artillery and the Elks. Herb moved from Hermantown to his home in Esko in 1976 which he enjoyed until moving to Suncrest in May 2008. In previous years he enjoyed boating, fishing, pheasant and deer hunting. Gardening was always his hobby and he liked to help others.
He was preceded in death by his parents Martha and Hans Aanonsen; sister, Helen (Kenneth) Greer; infant brother, Robert; nephews Glen Greer and Brian Heyesen.
Herb is survived by his daughter Diana (Michael) Wolf; grandson, Nicholas (Linda) Wolf; granddaughter, Rebecca (David) Harms; two great-grandchildren; brother, Roger (Nancy) Aanonsen; and nephews, great nephews and nieces.
Burial was in Oneota Cemetery
