Ignacia C. Asmussen, "Tiny" "Dona Nacha" , 66 years old and a forty-year resident of Brewster, died at her home Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007 after a hard fought battle with cancer.
She was born Feb. 1, 1941 in Arenal De Morelos Ahualulco San Luis Puerto Si, Mexico. She was the second daughter of Fermin Castillo Rios and Anaststasia Esquival Escobedo and the third child of eight siblings. She lived and attended school in her early life in Mexico and moved to Brewster, Wash. in 1967 where she married William H. Asmussen. Tiny was self taught in the English language, and on June 22, 1973 she proudly became a United States citizen. She worked in the apple industry at the onset of her arrival, including the running of an apple orchard with her husband, Bill, but for the last 12 years she worked in the family environment of the Brewster Apple House as a packing line foreman. Her hobbies included gardening, fishing and socializing. She is remembered for her enthusiastic "go get them" nature, outgoing personality, sense of humor, willingness to help those in need, award winning smile, but mostly for her great love of family, friends, and life.
Survivors include Neal Swezey, her sweetheart/life partner of the last 25 years; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Todd Hollenbeck of Brewster; son and daughter-in-law, William and Tonya Asmussen of Wenatchee; Vern Swezey and family of Brewster; Doug and Laura Swezey and family of Oregon; grandchildren, Michelle Tostenrude of Fresno, Calif., Michael Hollenbeck, Taylor Hollenbeck, Hannah Asmussen and Lauren Asmussen; mother, Anastasia Esquival Escobedo of Mexico; brothers, Reyes, Juan, and Pedro Castillo of Mexico, Jose Castillo of Texas; and her sisters, Maria and Lucy Castillo of Mexico.
Preceding her in death are her husband, William H. Asmussen; her brother, Anastasio Castillo; and her father, Fermin Castillo Rios.
A funeral service will be held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Brewster on Friday, December 14, 2007 at 1 p.m. Visitation hours are Thursday, December 13 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Legacy Memorial Funeral Home in Omak and Friday, Dec. 14, 2007 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Brewster from noon to 1 p.m. In celebration of her life, a social meal will be held after the service at the Fellowship Hall in the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Brewster. All are welcome to come and share.
