Mary G. Gotzel Amhaus, 96, entered eternal life on Tuesday evening, November 2, 2010, in the Hospice Suite located at Marquette General Hospital.

Born Mary Cannet April 15, 1914 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Adolph Cannet and Gabrielle (Pouls) Cannet, she was raised in Marquette, attending the Bishop Baraga and Graveraet High Schools. At the age of 16 she moved with her family to Brussels, Belgium where she resided for the next 20 years.

While in Belgium she married Alois Gotzel, a hairdresser, working with him as a beautician. In 1950 the couple moved to Marquette with their sons, Franz and Guy, where Alois owned and operated Marie's Beauty Shop on West Arch Street. Mary was employed with the Tonella & Rupp Furniture Store in the Drapery Department and also part-time with Montgomery Ward.

Following her husband's death in 1970, she moved to the Chicago area where she worked for St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Illinois, managing the hospital's gift shop for 10 years. In 1982 she married Charles Amhaus and the couple moved to Marquette in July 1990, spending their summers in Marquette and wintering in Tucson, Arizona. A member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Mary enjoyed playing cards.

Survivors included two sons, Franz Gotzel of Marquette; and Guy (Carol) Gotzel residing in New Mexico; her grandson, Paul Gotzel residing in Minnesota; several nieces, nephews, and cousins residing in Belgium and Germany.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Alois Gotzel in 1970; second husband, Charles Amhaus in 2001; by a sister, Simone Rosa in 1997; and by a brother, Willy VanCannet.
