"ALSTON, Jean S. long-time resident of Zephyrhills, passed away April 27, 2012 at home with her daughter in Talla- hassee, FL. Jean Elinor Sitcer was born February 27, 1924 in Adams, MA where she graduated from Adams High, attended secretarial school and met her future husband, Joe Lane Alston. They married in 1945 and made Zephyrhills their residence in 1949. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Zephyrhills, where she served as Church Secretary from 1958-74. Jean was a member and president of the Zephyrhills Garden Club (Garden Gate Circle) for over 20 years, winning numerous awards for her flower arrangements and participating in many community service projects. She was a sister of PEO, a national Philanthropic Educational Organization and a member of Golden Girls, a local community service organization. Jean and her husband were instrumental in the 1997 opening of the Zephyrhills Depot Museum, a restoration project housing historical railroad memorabilia and model trains. Friends and family will easily remember Jean for her caring ways, devotion to her family and friends and dedication to helping others. She is survived by her daughter, Jere Harkness (John) of Tallahassee; son, Jeffrey Alston (Lois) of Dade City; loving grandsons, Garrett Hughes, Leland Alston and Ryan Alston; many nieces and nephews, Ramona Dobbs of Raiford, FL, Chere Pattie of Madison, FL, Terry Alston of Thomasville, GA, Tommy Alston of Zephyrhills, Nancy Tucker of Lee, MA, Barb Fletcher of Ashley Falls, MA, Carol Morrison of Salisbury , VT, Fred Martin and Gus Martin of Cheshire, MA. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; her sisters, Doris, Marion and Lila; nephews Larry Crosby of Zephyrhills, Gary Roberts and Sam Brallier of Lake Butler, FL. A celebration of Jean's life will be held at 11 AM Saturday, May 12 at the First United Methodist Church, 38635 5th Ave, Zephyrhills. All are invited to a gathering with family and friends following the service at the Methodist Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd, Tallahassee, FL 32308 or the hospice or charity of your choice.
