Angelle Penn Adams, wife of L.B. Adams, was the daughter of J. Chris and Mary (Coleman) Penn. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School and attended Lander College. Mrs. Adams was co-founder of the Railroad Historical Center along with her husband and Charles H. Herndon Jr. and served as chairman of the board after the death of her husband in 1986. Mrs. Adams was dedicated to Lander University and the beautification of its campus and served on Lander's board of trustees. She was a past president of the Edgewood Cemetery Association. A member and loyal supporter of the Greenwood First Baptist Church, she was also a member of the Greenwood County Historical Society, the Lotus Garden Club and a founding member of l'Alliance Francais. In June 1990, Mrs. Adams received the Greenwood Rotary Club Community Service Award and in October 1994, she was awarded the Order of the Palmetto. In April 2003 she was given the Governor's Award for Historic Preservation. She was survived by a son, L.B. Adams, Jr. and his wife Margaret (Peggy) Adams of Greenwood; sisters, Christine Penn Henderson, Virginia Penn Johnson and Rebecca Penn Wilburn, all of Greenwood; grandchildren, Margaret Adams Conrad of Chapel Hill, N.C., L.B. (Bluford) Adams III of Iowa City, Iowa, D. Welborn Adams of Greenwood and Courtney Adams Christensen of Charlotte, N.C.; and 12 great-grandchildren; also her special friend and companion, Vera Lewis. Mrs. Adams was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude Penn Brabham. Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery, Greenwood. Blyth Funeral Home was in charge.
