Monegasque Aristocracy. The eldest son of Lamberto Grimaldi, in 1494 he succeeded his father as Lord of the Principality. He was the continuator of an ambiguous policy, partly conditioned by France and partly in search of independence from the powerful neighbor Charles VIII. During his rule he also served as viceroy of the Riviera on behalf of the French king. John II of Monaco died assassinated by his younger brother Luciano.
