Leroy served in the Second company Sharpshooters, Twenty-seventh Infantry, during the Civil War. Since the 27th Infantry did see duty at Petersburg, Leroy may well have suffered wounds there. He was in St. Mary's Hospital at Detroit, Mich., Feb. 21, 1865. He was working as a carpenter in Bridgewater, Williams, Ohio, when the 1870 census was taken.
