(Kirchenbote Obituary, written by Pastor Essig translated from German by LaVern Janke Strawn 1994)

"Christ Janke, Sr. died at two o'clock Friday morning at the home of his son, Christ Janke, in Odessa at the ripe old age of ninety years, nine months and nine days.
Mr. Janke was born at Warsaw, Poland, October 2nd, '827, and at the age of twelve emigrated with his parents to south Russia, where when twenty three he married Miss Mary Schlichter and in 1878 they came with their children to America and settled at Fessenden where Mrs. Janke died in 1890.
Thirteen years ago he was stricken with blindness, but otherwise remained in good health and six years ago came to Odessa to spend his remaining years with his son. Two weeks ago he had an attack of indigestion which with the complications brought on by old age finally caused his death. Mr. Janke had been a consecrated Christian all his life and asked for the Holy Sacrament which was administered him by Rev Essig the evening before he died. He leaves to mourn his loss, three children, Christof Janke and Mrs. Magdalene Weber of Odessa and Gottfried Janke of Lodi, Calif., and seventeen grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at the Pilgrim Congregational Church at 2:30 Saturday afternoon by Rev. Essig after which his remains were laid to rest in the John Haase cemetery north of town where several relatives are buried." (19 July 1918 Odessa Record Obituary)
