Gravestone is so eroded that nothing can be read. However, in a survey done on July 25, 1975 by Judge Jack Pope this gravestone was identified as that of George Washington Berry. No age or dates provided.
On 21 Dec 2014 Find A Grave contributor Nena Smothers provided the following information:
George was the last son of John and his 3rd wife Hannah.
In Jack Pope's book which I have he gives his dob as 1857 if you want to use that, also says he died 1898-1924
This came from a letter written by Admiral Will Mann to Harry Berry of Baird, a son of Andrew Jackson Berry, where he says: "In 1924 when I bought the Berry homestead there was a tombstone there for George Washington Berry but time had defaced dates by then except for John Berry and a Magby grave."
Hannah in 1898 interviewed by A J Sowell says to him
"George is 40 yrs old and was her youngest son."
Sowell got the impression he never married.
Hannah mentions she did not know why George first left after he and her moved to Baird to be near son Andrew Jackson as she had fallen and broke her back. She said George rode off on a beautiful bay horse. He told her she would not see him again but he would hear of them. At the time a daughter of Andrew Jackson was there and heard the conversation, Pearl Berry [Gaines].
So he either returned after he died or shortly before and was buried there.
