Mrs. Julia Fine Hoffman, 76, died at 3 o'clock Sunday morning from a heart attack at her apartment in the Baldwin Building, West King Street. Although she had been suffering from a slight cold and had been under the care of her doctor for some time, the family was unaware of her condition being such as it was and death was a surprise to the children and friends. Mrs. Hoffman was born in Lithuania, daughter of the late Solomon and Rachel Wolf. She came to this country when a girl, first residing in Baltimore, where she married Louis Fine. Soon after their marriage they spent a while in Brunswick, Md., coming to this city in 1891, when he established the first department store in Martinsburg known as Fine and Snyder, at the Northeast corner of Queen and Martin street, now occupied by Katz and Son. The firm was dissolved at the death of Mr. Fine in 1899 and his widow engaged in business on her own account farther North on Queen street, with her brother-in-law Charles Fine, now residing on West Race street, as manager. She also retired about 1930, and married the late G. Hoffman, of Waynesboro, Pa., residing in that city until he died five or six years later. Since then she has resided in this city. Mrs. Hoffman was a devout member of Beth Jacob Congregation, this city, and in her younger years quite active not only in all departments of the congregation and affiliated societies, but took a keen interest in other local affairs and was widely known and highly esteemed. She was also a member of the local Eastern Star, Hadassah, a number of times president of the Hebrew Ladies Aid, and associated with the Zionist organization. Surviving are four sons - Attorney Reuben Fine, Washington; Nathan Fine, Hancock, Md; Harry and Solomon Fine, this city; also three granddaughters - Mrs. Alden Capen, Philadelphia, and Lenore Fine, of Baltimore, daughters of Nathan; Frada Lois, daughter of Solomon, and a grandson - Sigmund, son of Harry; a great-granddaughter, Julia, born last Tuesday to Mr. and Mrs. Capen and named after her great-grandmother, and two brothers - Harry and Louis Wolf, Los Angeles, Cal. Rites were held at 3:30 this afternoon from Beth Jacob Synagogue. Rabbi W. A. Buchheim, pastor B'nai Abraham Congregation, Hagerstown, Md., officiated and the remains were interred in Beth Jacob Cemetery.
