Grygla - Clarence Carlson Jr., 55, died Thursday, June 11, 1998 at his home in Grygla following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 15 at Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla with Reverend Steven Sparley officiating. Casketbearers were L. Erickson, G. Englund, G. Kiesow, V. Clark, A. Thompson and A. Englund. Military honors were provided by the Grygla VFW Post. Burial was in Espelie Cemetery in Marshall county. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Clarence Carlson Jr. was born on November 11, 1942 in Detroit, MI, the son of Clarence H. and Florence (Hildreth) Carlson Sr. In March of 1943 the Carlson family moved to Espilie township near Grygla. Clarence was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church. He attended grade school in Grygla and graduated from Goodridge High School in 1960. He was a member of St. Petri Lutheran Church.

Following high school he attended Northwest Technical College for one year. In 1962, Clarence entered the United States Air Force and received his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in TX. He was stationed at Seward Air Force Base in TN. He served in Vietnam and was later stationed at Columbus Air Force Base in MS, at the ROTC Unit at Brookings, SD, Elmendorf Air Force Base in AK and the Grand Forks Air Force Base in ND.

Clarence was married to M.E.B. on January 15, 1965 at Smyrna, TN. Following his retirement from military service on August 1, 1982, the couple returned to the home farm near Grygla.

He was a member of the NCOA. At the Grygla VFW, Clarence was a trustee, gaming manager, a past post commander and served on the building committee. He was the owner/operator of the Grygla Cafe. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling.

Clarence is survived by his wife; one son, R. (C.) of Bemidji; one daughter, L. of Thief River Falls; his mother, Florence of Pine River; three brothers, W. of Dalbo, J. (M.) of Pine River and R. (P.) of Gatzke; one sister, R. Bowman of Blaine; and one step grandson.

Clarence was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Sr.; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
