Ahemaaz had come to California by way of Muscatine, Iowa, and followed the trade of blacksmith. He resided in San Joaquin Township which is where he was murdered by William Williams over a property dispute. He had been hit over the head with a pick handle, and when his body was discovered in a field the next morning, pigs had been feeding off his face. He was 57 years of age.
Additional information from Bill Herrman:
Mary and Ahemaaz had the following four children in addition to Henry, all of whom died young: Luther (1840-1846), Edward Walter (1842-1842), Marcia (1844-1846), and Tolford (1849-1849). Burial locations of these children are unknown. In about 1852, Ahemaaz left Mary and Henry in Muscatine, Iowa, for California.
