Frank Benner aged 30 years, son of Thomas Benner of Spruce Creek and an employee of the Spruce Creek work train, met with a serious accident between Union Furnace and no. 5 bridge. He slipped while loading rails and the sharp edge of the rail caught his right leg cutting clean through the foot leaving it hanging by a shred of skin.

"Lightning Shock Fatal to Invalid
"Frank Benner Dies at Altoona Hospital Following Storm Which Visited Juniata on Tuesday Evening.
"Suffering greatly from shock following the home being struck by lightning on Tuesday evening, Frank Benner, aged 54, ill for several weeks, died yesterday afternoon at the Altoona hospital where he was admitted late Tuesday evening. The lightning shock, coupled with his weakened condition due to ill health, caused his death.
"Mr. Benner resides with his brother, Harry Benner, at 925 Second avenue, Juniata. He was unable to work for several weeks and spent most of his time in a chair at the home. He was sitting in the dining room at the home Tuesday evening when a bolt of lightning struck the chimney.
"Mr. Benner, unable to move from the chair, was covered with soot from the chimney. He was temporarily dazed and he suffered considerably from shock. Following the shock his condition became such that he was rermoved to the Altoona hospital. Firemen were called to the Benner home to extinguish a small blaze due to the lightening.
"Frank Benner was a son of Thomas M. and Katherine Feister Benner, deceased, and he was born 54 years ago. He resided in Juniata for a number of years, and was employed at odd jobs lately. He is survived by the following brothers and sisters: P. H. Benner of this city, Harry of Juniata, Thomas of Mapleton, Charles of Lewistown, Mrs. Anna Webb of Spruce Creek and Miss M. Benner of this city.
"The remains will be taken to the home of the Brother, P. H. Benner, at 211 East Second avenue, Funeral services will be conducted on Friday afternoon. The body will be taken to Sinking Valley with interment made in the general Reformed cemetery."
