John Robert Osborn
Birth: Jan. 3, 1899
Breckland Borough
Norfolk, England
Death: Dec. 19, 1941

World War II Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Sergeant Major in the 1st Battalion Winnipeg Grenadiers. On December 19, 1941, in Hong Kong, China, Sergeant Major Osborn's company became divided during an attack. He took command of his part of the men, captured a hill position and held it for three hours. During the afternoon his company was cut off from the battalion and completely surrounded by the enemy. When grenades were thrown into their position Sergeant Major Osborn picked them up and threw back. A grenade landed in a position where it was impossible to pick it up and return in time. Shouting a warning, he threw himself on the grenade killing him instantly and saving the lives of many others. For extreme courage, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in April 1946. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
