John Hardee Dilworth was born at Spring Bluff Plantation, Camden County, Georgia, June 4 1812, the only son of George Andrew and Catherine Dilworth.He was educated by private tutors and at the University of Georgia and was married October 10, 1833 at Berne Plantation in Camden County to Mary Louisa Holzendorf, born November 14, 1812, the daughter of John Louis Kale Holzendorf and Margaret Creighton Holzendorf. The large plantation of Col. Dilworth was called Laurel Isle in Camden County and he died there June 16, 1853. His widow spent her last years with her daughter and died at her home in Monticello, Florida in June, 1875.
Col. Dilworth was active in the militia for several years. He served as 1st lieutenant in the "Camden County Chassuers", a local military company, 1836-1846. He then was commissioned Colonel of the 3rd. Regiment, Georgia Militia, September 21 , 1846, serving until his death.

John and Mary Louisa Dilworth were the parents of three children:

1. Catherine Dilworth b. 22 July 1834
2. George Weldon Dilworth b. 29 September 1836
3. John Holzendorf Dilworth b. 29 July 1838
