Patricia P. Norwood died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she grew up in Nutley, N.J. She had lived in the Fredericksburg area since 1984.

Mrs. Norwood earned a bachelor's degree in music from Wheaton College and her master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas in Austin. She had taught in the music department at the University of Mary Washington since 1977, having risen through the academic ranks from instructor to professor. She had served two terms as chair of the music department. Dr. Norwood received the J. Christopher "Topher" Bill outstanding faculty service award in 2005 recognizing an impressive list of activities that demonstrated her dedication and service to the institution, the community and her professional organizations.

Dr. Norwood had served on numerous university committees, ranging from the Committee on Campus Academic Resources, to the Promotion and Tenure Committee and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Self-Study Committee on Academic Affairs. As the chair of the Department of Music, she also had organized and promoted many events that her students and faculty participate in, and she has arranged for several well-known musicians to perform on campus.

In addition, she participated in many functions that benefited the community, including performances with the UMW Brass during the Fredericksburg Candlelight Tour and the Multicultural Fair. She also performed with the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Brass Ensemble and the Fredericksburg Community Concert Band.

Dr. Norwood presented over a dozen papers and published several articles, focusing on the topics of medieval vocal music, 19th century Lied, and music of the Federal era related to President James Monroe. She published a short booklet based on a paper entitled "Music in Mr. Monroe's Fredericksburg 1786-1789." She was also active within her discipline, with membership in the American Musicological Society, the Society for American Music, the Medieval Academy of America, and the Hagiographical Society, and served as secretary-treasurer of the Southeastern Medieval Association.
She had served Troop 72 of the Boy Scouts of America as a troop committee member. An ordained elder and deacon in the Presbyterian Church in the USA, she assisted with the confirmation class and vacation Bible school at the Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Gyles R. Norwood; her son, R. Kyle Norwood of Wilmington, N.C.; a twin brother, Robert B. Patterson Jr. of Chicago, Ill.; and twin sisters, Paige Patterson Geiger of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Pamela J. Patterson of London, Ohio; her father-in-law, Gyles D. Norwood; three uncles; many cousins; and nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with Rev. Allen H. Fisher Jr. officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the service time at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the UMW Music Scholarship Fund, 1119 Hanover St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401; to American Cancer Society for Ovarian Cancer Research, c/o Trudy Clifton, 113 Tallpines Ave., Locust Grove, Va. 22508; or to the Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg, 810 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.
