Funeral will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville, for Irene C. Ames, late of Amity.

Mrs. Ames died Feb. 7, 2004, in Hampton Alzheimer's Communities, McMinnville. She was 97. Private entombment will be in a mausoleum in Evergreen Memorial Park, McMinnville.

She was born Sept. 5, 1906, in Rock County, Neb., daughter of Willard Ross and Mary Viola Gaskill Childs. She moved to Southern California in 1912 and soon after she graduated from Montebello High School began teaching music at the Pasadena School of Music.

She and John Lloyd Westfall married in 1931 in Santa Ana, Calif. In 1942, they moved to Vanport and lived between Portland and Vancouver, Wash., in temporary housing constructed for shipyard workers. Before long, they moved to Metzger, then in 1946 to Dixie Mountain.

In 1953, the Westfalls moved to Forest Grove, where she opened a small music studio and taught music. As the business grew, they opened a larger studio, Westfall Music Studio in Hillsboro, then moved to Hillsboro. They remained there through the 1950s and 1960s.

She retired in 1969 and they moved to Amity. Her husband preceded her in death in 1974. She later married an Amity neighbor, author Francis "Frank" Ames, and they lived in Amity until his death in 1986.

Shortly after, Mrs. Ames moved to Hillside Manor in McMinnville, where she was a resident for a number of years. At Hillside, she worked actively as a volunteer, took writing classes and wrote "Callahan Incorporates," a sequel to her husband's Callahan series.

Mrs. Ames was recognized for her volunteer work when she received the Volunteer of the Year Award.

She later returned to Amity to be near her son.

Survivors include her son, Willard Westfall of Amity; three daughters, Judy Westfall of Forest Grove, Roberta Andrews of Billings, Mont., and Phyllis Westfall of Sparks, Nev.; a stepdaughter, Emily McClaine of Hanford, Calif.; 19 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Rowena Warner in 1996; two sons, John Westfall in 1997 and Glen Westfall in 2000; five sisters, three brothers and a great-granddaughter, Justine Westfall.
