Newton Mikeworth enlisted in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He enlisted as a private for 3 years in Company D, 98th Regiment Illinois U.S. Infantry on August 12, 1862 in Crawford County, Illinois. He was a resident of Elkton, Crawford County, Illinois, 18 years old, a farmer, single, 5'-9 1/2" height, light hair, grey eyes, and a fair complexion. His nativity was licking County, Ohio. He mustered into service at Camp Centralia, Illinois on September 3, 1862. Newton was discharged from his unit at Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee for a disability on June 24, 1863. Due to his medical condition, he returned home to Crawford County, Illinois and died a short time later on August 10, 1863.

His father, John Mikeworth, filed for a pension with the U.S. Government for the death of his son from his war disability on January 24, 1878. A gravestone was contracted to be provided for his grave site on November 29, 1879 and on June 9, 1888, and delivered to Oblong, Crawford County, Illinois.

Newton is buried next to his grandfather, Abraham Mikeworth memorial # 71596690.

His mother was Jemima Sligar.
