Anita Calhoon was born on June 4, 1938 at Winner, South Dakota to Jerry and Emma (Urban) Spinar. She grew up on the family farm near Colome, South Dakota and attended school in Colome graduating in 1956. Following high school she attended Dakota Wesleyan College in Mitchell, South Dakota where she received her two year teaching certificate. On June 8, 1958 she married James Calhoon at Winner, South Dakota. Following their marriage they made their home on a ranch near Ideal, South Dakota. In 1969 they moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota where she attended Northern State College. She graduated from Northern State with a BS in Education and a minor in Library Science in 1971. The family then moved to Clark South Dakota where they made their home until 1975. While living in Clark, Anita raised her family and did substitute teaching. In 1975 they moved to McLaughlin, South Dakota where she became the McLaughlin School Librarian, a position she held until the time of her death.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in McLaughlin and at the age of 18 accepted the Lord as her personal savior. Anita was also the president of the Women's MIssionary Fellowship. She had served as church Sunday School Superintendent for many years and was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.
She is survived by one son Lance at Texarkana, Texas, two daughters, Cyndy Chapin of RAF Milden Hall, England and Rebecca Telin of Minot, North Dakota. Grandchildren Amanda, Joshua and Hannah Chapin and Harkin Telin. Two brothers, Leo Spinar of Brookings, South Dakota and Melvin Spinar of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. One sister Irene Fischer of Rapid City, South Dakota.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
