He was baptized at Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston, SD. Louis entered into the U. S. Army on 2/27/43 during WWII, serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was honorably discharged on 12/4/45.

Following his military service, he married Roseline Struck on 2/3/46 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Dimock, SD. He was self-employed in Parkston for 11 years, owning and operating a service station. In 1957 he and his family moved to Armour, SD where they purchased the Chevrolet dealership. Being very active in community affairs as well as church and cub scouts. He served as mayor for 12 years.
In 1971 they bought the O'Leary Chevrolet dealership in Yankton, SD. While there he was actively involved in church, Rotary Club and SDADA. He served on the South Dakota Automobile Dealers Association Board of Directors. In 1981 he was elected to serve as the president. The TIME Magazine chose him as one of the top 24 quality dealers in the nation in 1984. He retired from his association with General Motors Corporation in 1986. In 2001, Louis and Roseline moved to Lincoln, Nebraska.

He and his wife had three married sons, Robert and wife Leslie and son Jeremiah, Russell and wife Eileen and daughter Katelyn and son Jim and wife Sarah, son Max and daughter
