Donald was an Air Corps bombadier and was killed in operations over Italy on April 5, 1944.

Apr. 5, 1944 - 2nd Lt. Robert L. Holland (763) and 2nd Lt. James D. Gartland Jr. (763) aircraft collided at the assembly point over Altamura, killing all on board on both planes. On the Gartland crew were: James D. Gartland Jr. (Pilot), Winfred P. Russell, Justin A. Taylor, Donald L. Abair (Bombardier), Thomas L. Yates, Frank B. Lucas, George I. Karren, Frank E. Carroll, Richard T. Evan, and Alois R. Glinski. This information came from the "460th Bomb Group History" by Duane L. and Betty J. Bohnstedt. Note: (763) is short for 763rd Bombardment Squadron (H).
