Benjamin Thuma, reportedly a son of Eva Ann (née Wachs) and Johannes "John" Thuma, was born in 1829 in Frankford Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Along with his family, he migrated to Richland County, Ohio. John Thuma died reportedly in 1838. Eva Thuma's household was enumerated in 1840 in Richland County's Perry Township.

Benjamin Thuma and Elizabeth Ruhl were married on 28 November 1852 in Richland County. The couple—along with Elizabeth's parents and siblings—moved to Holt County, Missouri, before the couple's first child was born in 1856. The couple eventually became the parents of eight children, all born in Holt County.

Benjamin Thuma enrolled on 9 August 1862 in Oregon, Holt County, Missouri, and was commissioned as a captain in Company C, 58th Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia (EMM). (These EMM units were formed for anti-guerrilla operations. Their part-time personnel were: called to duty for local emergencies, paid only when on duty, and not eligible for federal pensions.) The 58th Regiment was on active duty from August to September 1862, and from February to April 1863. Benjamin Thuma also was commissioned on 15 September 1865 as a captain, Company D, 32nd Regiment, Missouri Militia. After the war, he resided in Holt County until at least 1876.

Benjamin Thuma with his wife Elizabeth and family migrated to Pawnee County, Kansas, before 1880, and to Spokane County, Washington, before 1900. Elizabeth died in 1903 in Rockford, Spokane County.

In fall 1910, Benjamin Thuma relocated to Middletown, Canyon County, Idaho, where he died on 11 November 1910. He was 81.
