Elmer Duke, 94, of Tunnelton, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009 in Denton Regional Hospital, Denton, Texas. He was born Dec. 23, 1914, in Tunnelton, a son of the late Earl Edward and Sara Jane Wissinger Duke. Prior to his retirement, he worked for the North American Coal Company and in various mines throughout Western Pennsylvania for over 50 years. His final position was with Helen Mine in Homer City, as a foreman. He retired in 1985. Elmer spent the last 11 years residing in Texas. He was the "Mr. Fix- it" of Tunnelton, a Boy Scout leader for many years, a member of Tunnelton Presbyterian Church, a world traveler, an avid news watcher, a good son and a great husband, a teaching father and loving grandfather and caring great-grandfather. He is survived by four sons and a daughter: Marlin E., Flower Mound, Texas, David L., Saltsburg, James E., Rices Landing, Ray E., Sacramento, Calif., and Sarajane "Sally" Hyman, Hideaway, Texas. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Bergman Duke, in 1997; three brothers, Ellis, William E. and Joseph E.; and three sisters, Edith Russell, Elnora S. Cardellino and Ruth F. Phar. There will be a viewing from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Tunnelton United Presbyterian Church in Tunnelton. Services will follow, with the Rev. Susan Porch Lantz officiating. Interment will be in Edgewood Cemetery, Saltsburg.
