Charles P. Montoya passed away at the age of 81 years old in Albuquerque, after a lengthy illness. He was born on June 16, 1927, in Raton, the son of the late Carlos and Lena Romero Montoya. Charles was a lifelong resident of Cimarron.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Cimarron. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Bessie Montoya, Emma Wade, and Ramona Burmeister and husband Slim, his niece Bessie Romero, nephew Billy Burmeister, and his uncle Robert Montoya, who was his father's twin brother.

Charles was a building contractor for many years. He owned and operated the Ranch Bar in Cimarron, Club 85 in Springer and Cold Beer in Colfax. He was the leader of a band "The Melody Makers" which later was named "The Rockets." His nephew Robert Casias played along with him throughout the years. They played for weddings and other occasions almost every weekend for many years. He will be remembered as a saxophone player with people dancing to his music and a lot of good times.

Charles is survived by two special nieces and two special nephews that he helped his sister Ramona raise: Doris Gonzales and husband Albert, and Mary Lucille Marquez and Luis of Albuquerque, Robert Casias and wife Sheryl of Cimarron, and Dennis Casias and wife Patsy of Los Alamos. He is also survived by his "Sunshine" great niece Dee Dee Sanchez and husband Joe; nieces Bella Martinez and husband Mario, Judy LeDoux and husband Ernie, all of Cimarron, Linda Meyer and husband Calvin of Rolla, Mo.; nephews Joseph Cruz and wife Debbie of Shawnee, Okla., and Ronnie Burmeister and Karla of Raton. Also surviving are many great and great-great nieces and nephews, too numerous to mention, and his dog Chico.

Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be held at Immaculate Conception Parish in Cimarron at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008 followed by a Solemn Mass of the Resurrection at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Father John Cannon as celebrant. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
