On his grave marker, it states that George was a Captain -- and no doubt seafaring was a big part of his life, as it was to his ancestors and his descendants -- but primarily, it seems, he was a businessman and entrepreneur. Between 1830 and 1849, he owned two schooners, two brigantines, and a brig, which were usually mastered on trade expeditions (mostly to the Caribbean) by other captains; he then advertised to sell the dry goods, groceries, and ships' goods that were brought back to Yarmouth. In 1833, he owned a tin 'manufactory', had a farm, owned a fish house and even had an interest in a shoe-making operation. Along the way, he somehow seems to have gained an enemy: just weeks after his 107 ton Brigantine Diamond launched in 1834, there was a failed bombing attempt at his home; had the fuse on the otherwise expertly constructed bomb not gone out, there is no saying what could have happened to George and his young family.
