Cornelius, who was always called Neil, probably to differentiate him from his father, was the youngest of five children. His parents had both immigrated to the United States from Ireland, his mother in 1862, his father probably the year before. Other than a year or so in Manhattan in 1899, Neil--noted on his draft card as a tall, slender man with gray eyes and black hair--spent his entire life in Stamford. In his 20s he was a clerk, he worked as a driver in the Hoyt household for a time beginning in 1898; he then worked for Yale & Towne Locks until the end of his life. In 1903, he married Sarah Cassidy and had two children, a boy and a girl. One Monday, a week before Christmas, he set off to walk to a nearby relative's house when he suddenly fell to the ground, stricken by a cerebral hemorrhage. He died almost instantaneously. He was just 48 years old.
