Porter "Doc" Haynes, 79, of Lorain died Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at his home in Lorain following a brief illness.
Born and raised in Bronston, Kentucky, he moved to South Amherst in 1950 and had lived in Lorain for the past 12 years. He served with the Army during World War II in the European theater and was the recipient of the EAME Ribbon with three Bronze Stars.
He worked for Cleveland Quarries as a crane operator for 40 years. Mr. Haynes was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Amherst. He enjoyed repairing lawnmowers and small motors.
Survivors include his companion for 13 years, Mary Beck of Lorain; a son, Gary Haynes of Robins, Tenn.; a daughter, Linda Merkle of Sheffield Lake; stepdaughters, Kathy Miller, Irma Shuck, both of Lorain and Betty Elbert of Vermilion; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Cecil Haynes.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Marie Haynes in 1991; and a brother, Charlie Haynes.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hempel Funeral Home 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. The Rev. Harold Taylor, pastor of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township. Memorial may be made to New Life Hospice, 5255 N. Abbe Road, Elyria 44035
