Gertrude May was the daughter of August and Susan Weilmuenster Briesacher. She married Thomas Earl Sargent on May 11, 1908 in Jefferson County, Illinois. They had 4 children before her death. She asked to hold her youngest child, Violet (who was approximately 6 months old) as she was dying from an asthma attack. The 4 children were split up. The boys, Parker and Pearl lived with their father and used to help farm. The daughters, Pansy and Violet were in different families. Pansy was adopted but Violet was sent from home to home her whole life. People would take her in on the promise of her father was to pay for expenses but he would fail to do so and she would have to go to another home.
