Stephen served in the 18th. Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, Private, Service Nr.: 5360 (later renumbered 332317), for an unknown period before his death (from bronchitis) at 58, Main Street, East Kilbride, Lanarkshire. At this time his usual residence was the same as his parents - 85, Bellgrove Street, Dennistoun, Glasgow, Lanarkshire.

Death certificate records his occupation: Clerk. No mention of his HLI Service in either the certificate or on the headstone.

His death is recorded at CWGC. For many years - until early 2013 - it was noted on their website and in their records as "sickness" but this has since been corrected and removed. The time of his death fell within the cut-off date of the scheme for those who had died as a result of their active participation in The Great War.

18th. (Service) (4th. Glasgow) Battalion Highland Light Infantry was locally raised as a Bantam Battalion by the Lord Provost and Glasgow Corporation from 26th. February, 1915.
June, 1915 - 11th. November, 1918 the 18th. were part of 106th. Brigade under orders from 35th. Division which arrived in France in January, 1916, serving there and Flanders until the Armistice.
The 18th. H.L.I. were involved, or available for:
Battle of Albert, 1-13th. July, 1916, including the capture of Montauban, Mametz, Fricourt, Contalmaison and La Boisselle.
German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, 14th. March - 5th. April, 1917.
Second Battle of Passchendaele, 26th. October, - 10th. November, 1917.
First Battle of Bapaume, 24-25th. March, 1918.
Battle of Ypres, 28th. September - 2nd. October, 1918.
Battle of Courtrai, 14-19th. October, 1918.
Actions of Tieghem, 31st. October, 1918.

Erected by Stephen & Margaret Brennan In loving memory of their dear son Stephen who died 3rd Oct. 1920 Aged 24 years. Also the above Margaret Welsh who died 14th. Novr. 1935 Aged 73 years beloved wife of Stephen Brennan. The above Stephen Brennan who died 26th. Sept. 1946 Aged 76 years.
Base reads:- "Blessed are the Pure in Heart".
