Dudley Finch Holbert was the oldest of three children born to Edward Bowen Holbert, Sr and Florence Finch Holbert. He was named after his mother's father, Dudley Baldwin Finch. Dudley had a younger brother, Edward Bowen Holbert, Jr and a younger sister, Florence Jane Holbert. Dudley lived at 1700 Portland Avenue in Minneapolis after he was born with his mother, his father, and his aunt, Lilla and her husband, Sewell and their new baby.

According to the 1910 Census, the family had moved to 703 Lincoln Avenue in St. Paul, MN where Dudley lived with his father, his mother and his brother, Edward. In the 1920 Census Dudley had moved to 19 Kenwood Parkway where he lived with his mother, his father, his brother, Edward, his sister, Jane, his grandmother, Mary E Finch and two servants. Dudley went to Shattuck Academy in Faribault and then to the University of Minnesota where he got an engineering degree. The 1930 Census finds Dudley living in Manhattan, New York as a machinery Salesman.

Dudley loved to take photos and was an avid photographer, developing his own film in a homemade black room. When his daughter, Barb was young he took several photos of her that he developed himself.

On May 6, 1936, Dudley married Elizabeth Gabrielle Donohue. Nine months later, their first child, Mary Barbara Holbert was born. they were living in Buffalo, New York at the time. Dudley was working for Archer Daniels as a manager of the New York office. Archer Daniels then sent Dudley to Toledo, Ohio. In 1940 while living in Toledo their second child, Jane Neary Holbert was born.

Mr Archer died and everyone he hired got fired and Dudley lost his job. Dudley then got a job with a mill that he managed as a mechanical engineer. They moved to St. Joseph, Missouri in 1948 and moved into a house on 2319 West Circle Drive. Dudley and Elizabeth would live there the rest of their lives. Dudley got a job replacing people who were killed in a mill explosion. Elizabeth did not like the house they moved into but Dudley said he would fix it up for her. Dudley replaced the ladder to the second floor with a set of stairs and built an addition on the back of the house and a screened in porch in the front of the house. Dudley lovingly put a swing in on the front porch and his children and then his grandchildren loved to swing on it when they came to visit. Barb and Jane would often sleep out on the screened in porch on hot summer days.

Dudley loved fried eggs and bacon and had them for breakfast almost every day of his life. He also loved steak and potatoes for dinner.

On June 8, 1979, Dudley had a stroke at his home on 2319 West Circle Drive in St. Joseph, Missouri and died. Dudley's remains were creamated and brought up to Minnesota. His ashes were interred in Oakland cemetery on June 12, 1979. He is buried with his wife, Elizabeth in the Wilson-Finch family plot. His father and mother, Edward Bowen Holbert and Florence Finch Holbert, his daughter, Barb, his grandparents, and great grandparents are also buried in this plot.
