ANDREW “ANDY” WILLIAM DESCHLER was born on 31 Dec 1874, a Thursday in Covington, Kenton Co., KY. He might have been born at 524 Madison, which is where his parents lived in 1873. Andrew was the first of eight children born to Andreas "Andrew" Deschler and Louisa Marie Betz.

“Andy” grew up as if he lived in a town in Germany. Beer gardens were on almost every corner. German was spoken in his parents’ home, and most of his parents friends were of German extraction.

As with his brothers he was expected to go into the trades starting off as an apprentice. After finishing the 8th grade, the norm for the time, he started his apprenticeship. In 1895 he is living with his parents at 42 Elm, Covington, KY and working as a "Jeweler" at Fox Bros & Co., Cincinnati, OH.

No, Andy did not sell jewelry from behind a retail counter. He was an artisan, a craftsman, a jewelry maker. He would get a piece of rough gold from the bin and take it back to his workbench. Then, with the tools of an artist, he would carve it into a piece of fine jewelry.

ANDREW WILLIAM DESCHLER, age 23, married FLORA A SCHAEFER, age 21, on 28 Jan 1897 in Covington. They were probably married in Andy’s parent’s house, Andreas "Andrew" Deschler and Louisa Marie Betz, at 42 Elm St., Covington, Kenton Co., KY. The newlyweds did move into Andy’s parent’s home on Elm St, and were still living there in 1900, along with 9 other family members. In 1900 he was working as a "Jeweler" at 513 Race St., Cincinnati, OH.

On 4 Jul 1904, Independence Day, Andy had his only child, Marcella Louise Deschler, who was born at Andy’s residence at 749 W. 9th St. in Cincinnati.

When Walter M. Sprong, the 1910 Census enumerator, arrived at Andy’s residence on 26 Apr 1910 he recorded the Deschler family as living on Edgewood Ave. in Springfield Twp. Hamilton Co., OH just down the street from the Saint Clair Convent. Andy is recorded as working in a “Jewelry Store.”

World War I began and on 12 Sep 1918, Andy age 43, registered for the draft. He is described as "Medium Height, Stout build, Brown eyes, [with] Brown hair." And now he is working as a “Jeweler” for “Joseph Waterman at 512 Race St., Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH.”

By the 1920 Census, Andy’s family is still living on Edgewood Ave. in Springfield Twp. Hamilton Co., OH and his occupation is still listed as “Jeweler” for a “Jewelry Company.” His daughter Marcella was 15 by then.

Sadness was coming to Andy Deschler’s household. On 25 Feb 1926, Flora A. Schaefer Deschler, age 51, passed away and was laid to rest in the German Evangelical Protestant Cemetery (now Vine Street Hill Cemetery).

In Jun of that same year (1926) Andy’s daughter, Marcella Louise Deschler. married John Raymond Clifton. And after his wife’s death, Andy moved in with his daughter. By 1930 Andy was living at 29 Edgemont Rd. in Edgemont, Springfield Twp. Hamilton Co., OH. This was probably the same actual house that Andy lived in in 1910. Though only 55, Andy’s occupation is listed as “none.” But the house was certainly not quiet, Marcella’s 6 month and 2 year old girls made sure of that!

In the 1940 Census, Andy is still living with his daughter’s family, Marcella Louise Deschler Clifton, at 29 Section Rd. Edgemont, Springfield Twp. Hamilton Co., OH. Though the address is different, this is probably the same house in which they lived in 1930. The household was probably lively with Marcella’ two girls, age 12 and 10.

Then on Andrew William Deschler, age 69, passed away on 17 Mar 1944 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH. At that time, 6 of his siblings were still living and they all came to the funeral. Andy was a Mason all his adult life.

Andy was laid to rest, next to his beloved, Flora, in the German Evangelical Protestant Cemetery (now Vine Street Hill Cemetery), 3701 Vine St., Hamilton Co., Cincinnati, OH
