Captain Helen Edith Bailey served in the AMERICAN NURSE CORPS during WWII with the 77th Evacuation Unit. Captain Bailey was wounded on October 11, 1944 in Verviers, Belgium when her unit was setting up a hospital in an abandoned school building. Captain Bailey was struck in the neck by shrapnel when the school was bombed by 4 airplanes. It is still unknown if this was an enemy raid or "friendly fire". She died in Los Angeles, CA from complications of the shrapnel injury.
Captain Bailey was awarded the Purple Heart Medal as well as seven (7) Bronze Star Medals.
