Mariana Garatea Basterrechea, 93, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2011, in Idaho Falls from natural causes.

Mariana was born Oct. 4, 1917, in Hailey, Idaho, to Basque immigrants Pio and Francesca Garatea. She married John Basterrechea on Aug. 29, 1942, in Rupert, Idaho. Together they had three children, Larry, Delores and Michael.

For the past 70 years, Mariana devoted her life to both her family and the Basterrechea Sheep Company. Modest and understated, she was a tireless worker. As her friends and family can attest (including the hundreds of men and women brought over from the Basque country throughout the years to work for the company), she was a world-class cook. More importantly, however, Mariana was an unbelievably kind, loving and bright woman.

Mariana was preceded in death by her husband, John; son, Michael; and brothers, Manual and Carmelo Garatea. She is survived by her sister, Alice Garatea Majchrzak of Lakewood, Calif.; her son, Larry Basterrechea of Rupert; her daughter, Delores Basterrechea Martin of Idaho Falls; her grandsons, Brian Basterrecha of Henderson, Nev., and Spencer (Emily) Martin of Boise; and her great-grandchildren, Ezra and Isabella Basterrechea.

A private service will be held for the immediate family.
