Family history claims that Laura died while she and Bennett were moving from Custer County, Oklahoma back to East Texas a few years after their son, Oen, died and Bennett's mercantile business failed. Laura reportedly fell ill during the journey and either died on the train or shortly after they disembarked in Luling, Texas, to seek medical treatment.
Laura's death certificate reports that she died from Tumor of the Mediastinum, her death was recorded simply under the name Mrs. B.D. Merritt, and she was buried in Luling Cemetery. It is unclear if that is Luling City Cemetery (Luling Cemetery, Inc.) or Luling Civic Cemetery; we have not, yet, found her grave.
