Augustus "Gus" Washington Graham was born November 9, 1887 in Logan County, Arkansas to William Thomas "Tommie" Graham and Mary (nee Smith) Graham. Gus' mother, Mary Graham, died when he was about 5 years of age, circa 1892, during or shortly after she gave birth to Gus' youngest sister, Beatrice Graham. Gus has eight siblings: William "Tommie" James, Nancy Jane, Bell, Rissie, George, Joseph "Joe" Hamilton, John, and Beatrice Graham. In the birth order, Gus was 2nd from the youngest. After the death of his mother, Gus' sister, Rissie (who was age 14) helped rear the five youngest Graham siblings.

Gus' father, Tommie Graham, moved his family to Indian Territory (now Vian, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma). William Thomas Graham owned and ran a cotton gin in Vian, Oklahoma. Gus grew up picking cotton and helping with his father's cotton gin. He was reared in a rural setting where he learned to plant and harvest, a large vegetable garden. Gus stated his sister, Rissie, was like a mother to him. Gus was close in age to his brother John and his sister Beatrice. Gus was well experienced at riding horses. He played the banjo and harmonica and enjoyed country music and country entertainment.

Gus' older sister, Jane, married Francis Marion "Dump" Hartley, and his sister Rissie married David Still. The Stills and Hartleys lived on river boats on the Arkansas and Illinois rivers near Gore, Oklahoma. Gus shared stories about the Stills and Hartleys fur trapping. They taught Gus how to fur trap. They lived on the river near Gore, where their paternal aunt, Babe Graham Plunkett, was a midwife in the community.

At age 21, Gus married Alice "Allie" Johnson in Crawford, Arkansas. They moved to Claremore, Rogers County, Oklahoma. Gus and Allie had two daughters: Mary Emma Graham and Nannie Graham. Their oldest daughter, Mary Emma, married Clyde Love from Foyil, Oklahoma. Their daughter, Nannie, married Ransom Gullett. She died of an ether overdose during the birth of her son, Donald Gullett. Nannie's death was very tragic for Gus and Allie.

After the death of Nannie Graham Gullett, Gus and Allie reared Nannie's son Donald Gullett. They moved to Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma. While in Ft. Gibson, Gus worked as the police chief. They later moved to Muskogee and lived near their daughter Mary Graham Love's family. Gus and Allie were present in the lives of their five grandchildren. Gus was also present in the lives of his great grandchildren. Gus planted and harvested a large vegetable garden, every year, until his age prevented his outdoor activity. His wife, Allie, died in 1956.

After his wife expired, Gus spent time traveling to visit his siblings. Gus traveled to California and spent some time with Rissie Graham Still and her family; as well as his brother Joe Graham and family. Gus frequently spent time in Bixby, Oklahoma with his brother John and John's family. Gus's oldest brother, Tommy lived in Texas as did his sister Beatrice. Over the years, Gus made several trips to Texas to visit family.

As Gus aged, he lived near or with his daughter, Mary Graham Love, who assisted him with necessary supports. Gus was strong willed and dogmatic about his beliefs. He lived a long healthy life and died at the age of 98, in 1981 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He is buried near his wife, Allie, and daughter, Nannie, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Claremore, Oklahoma.
