He was a retired employee of CIT Group Financial Services, former owner of Akins True Value Hardware and Lampmaker, a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Destin United Methodist Church. Survivors: his wife, the former Virginia Shaw; [3]daughters, ; two brothers, Dr. William Akins and Dr. Richard Akins; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral: 10 a.m. Wednesday, St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 319 Browns Lane. Burial: Cave Hill. Visitation: Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, 4-8 p.m. Tuesday.
