Thomas Howard Cather was the son of Fabricus Agustus Cather and Helen Mallonee Cather. He married Hettie Brohard on 5 July 1905 in Taylor Co., WV. Thomas served as the Mayor of Grafton for two terms, 1923-1929.


Many Pay Repsects At Walnut Street Home for Former Mayor

Throngs of friends of Thomas Howard Cather, former Grafton Mayor, are calling the late home at 342 Walnut Street, to pay last tribute to one of the city's most highly respected citizens.

Friends may visit the late home until 11 a.m. Sunday, three hours before the funeral hour which has been set for 2 O'clock and will be conducted from the Barlett Funeral Home on McGraw avenue. Officating for the service wil be the Rev. W. T. (Gillfore (sp?)) with Mystic Lodge N. 75, A. F. and A.M. in charge of graveside services.
Mr. Cather, aged 77, died at City hospital yesterday at 1:15 p.m. following a one-day illness. He had been stricken with paralysis the previous day.
Serving as Grafton's mayor for two terms from 1923 to 1929, Mr. Cather was an active member of the Republican party throughout his life. Until three years ago when he retired and moved his residence to Walnut street, he operated a large farm on the Philippi pike near Webster for about 15 years.
It was between 1914 and 1918 that he was affilitated in the merchantile business in Boulder, Colo. He also taught in the engineering school at West Virginia university from 1905 to 1910, and before that was a machinist for the Baltimore and Ohio railroad company.
A native of Taylor county, he was born on December 17, 1870, a son of F. A. and Helen Mallonee Cather.
He leaves his widow, Mrs Hettie Brohard Cather, and four children, Barbara, Elizabeth, Augustus B., and John S. Cather. A brother, Henry K. Cather, of San Antonio, Texas, also survives.
He held membership in Mystic Lodge No. 75, A. F. and A. M., and K. of P. Lodge, No. 8.
