The Rev. William Buege, D.D. was born October 7, 1912 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He became a child of God through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism in November 1912 and confirmed those vows for himself in 1924. He attended Christian Day School and Concordia College in Milwaukee and graduated from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri in 1936 and was ordained into the Holy Ministry in 1938. On June 29, 1938, he married Gladys Apel in Milwaukee. In 1961, Concordia Seminary awarded him a Doctor of Divinity degree.

Rev. Buege began his ministry by serving congregations in Carthage, Missouri and St. Joseph, Missouri. From 1943-1945 he was Chaplain with the 164th infantry in the South Pacific. From 1946-1964 he was pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Minneapolis during which time a landmark edifice, designed by famed architect, Eliel Saarinen, was erected and later voted the most beautiful church built during a 25 year period in this country.

Dr. Buege served as Chairman of Synod's Board of Missions to the Deaf from '47 to '58 and on Synod's Board of Directors from '59 to '67. He was the Wenchell Foundation Lecturer at Concordia Seminary in 1957 and Summer School Lecturer in 1959. He served as the Gross Memorial Lecturer at Valparaiso in 1959 and on the University's Advisory Board from 1959 to 1962.. He was the first Dean of the Chapel at Valparaiso serving from 1964 to 1967.

Dr. Buege made a trip around the world in 1960 and served as the Far-East Chaplain's Retreat Master in Tokyo, Japan that same year. He repeated that role as Retreat Master for Chaplains in Germany in 1970. In 1967 he left Valparaiso returning to the parish ministry at churches in Missouri, California, and Phoenix, AZ., in Arizona serving as Vacancy and Assisting Pastor.

Dr. Buege authored "Preaching with Power", "The Cross of Christ", and "The Lord's Men". From 1967 to 1982 he was the editor for the devotional series "Strength for the Day"

Bill was called to his eternal rest on Thursday, March 7, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Gladys, his son Bill, daughter Karen, 3 granddaughters, Amanda, Margaret, and Emily and one great grandchild, Amelia.
