Jacob Abendschoen immigrated from Schweigern, Wurtemberg, Germany to Marietta, Ohio, in 1847, followed the next year by his brother Frederick ( # 11093588) Frederick's wife and two children.

(The surname in German is spelled with an umlaut mark over the "o" of Abendshon to equal the "oe" sound that then is spelled in English that way, Abendschoen, without the umlaut mark.)

Jacob and Fredericka Reiner Abendshoen were the parents of five young children who died in Germany, plus Johanna Catherine Abendshon Ebinger, who shares this tombstone with them, along with her husband Jacob Ebinger; plus son Johan Jacob "John J." buried as AbendshAN in Colorado.

(Thank you to Schwaigern, Germany, researcher Ulf Hartmann for clarification of the Abendschon-Ebinger associations in Germany.)

Jacob and his brother Frederick had immigrated from Germany to the Watertown area of Washington County outside of Marietta and then to the heavily German Harmar neighborhood of Marietta. Frederick is buried in Harmar Cemetery there.

The Jacob Sr. and Jr. Abendshons were in the saddle, harness, leather, tannery and glue businesses. Most city directory references to that referred to the younger Jacob, who then moved away.

Confusingly, there also were two contemporary related Fredericka Abendshons in Marietta then. One was wife of this immigrant Jacob, Fredericka Reiner Abendschoen. The other one was the daughter-in-law of this Jacob Sr.'s brother Frederick in Harmar Cemetery, Fredericka Kyriss Abendschoen. Tombstones, city directories and censuses unhelpfully omit the women's maiden names, and they are easily confused without it.

*************

Schwaigern, Germany, researcher Ulf Hartmann reported that Jacob and family immigrated in May 1847, on the D'Orleans, with Jacob's wife, son, daughter and Ebinger son-in-law. Father Jacob's brother Frederick immigrated a year later with his wife Magdalena, Henry and Johanna Abendshon on the Claiborne from Le Havre, France, to New York on 29 May 1848.

Jacob also was joined his same year by a Jacob Boger of Schwaigern. Although his surname was the same as that of Frederick Abendschoen's wife, Jacob doesn't appear to be a near relative of either immigrant Jacob or Frederick or either wife. More likely, simply a neighbor coming for similar reasons and glad to have someone from home to re-start out with.

Findagrave contributor "Fran" # 47001337 provided this additional record showing Frederick Abendschon of Harmar Cemetery and this Jacob of Mound as brothers, and provides their parents' names and the baptism records of the family. That also added the maiden name of this Jacob's wife Frederika and a list of their young children who had died in Germany before the surviving family moved to Ohio:

(Ulf Hartmann added the parents of this Jacob's son-in-law Jacob Ebinger - not Abendschoen - as the son of Johann Jakob Ebinger and Christian Friderika Breitenbucher.)
