Ora was in the trade business in Ashland, Grafton, New Hampshire and in 1902 he was elected Treasurer of Grafton County.


Hon. Ora Alden Brown

A favorite son of his native Grafton County, Hon. Ora Alden Brown has been a dominant figure and integral factor in the political and commercial growth and development of his community. Throughout the years of his career, his interests have greatly broadened in scope and importance. He holds a position of marked esteem and regard of many associates and friends in various enterprises in which he is engaged. He has risen with rapid gradation from clerk in a large general store in Grafton County to the ownership of the establishment, and at the same time is a prominent operator in the lumber and real estate fields in his home section in all parts of New Hampshire. In political circles Mr. Brown is a member of the Governorís Council of the state of New Hampshire, to which office he was elected on the Republican platforms in 1826 from the Eastern Judicial District of Grafton County. Quoting from The Ashland Citizen: He is generally known as a man of high character, public spirited being possessed of unusual administrative and executive talents, and with a genial personality. Indeed, he is so well known and so favorably regarded throughout New Hampshire that further introduction seems unnecessary. He has been active in other commercial activities. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Ashland Savings Bank. Ora is likewise active in the social and fraternal endeavors of the town and county and includes among his affiliations all of the Masonic bodies in which he holds all intermediate degrees up to and including the thirty-second degree in the Scottish Rite. At the same time he is a member of the Bektash Temple Ancient and Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and the New Hampshire State Grange, Patron of Husbandry. Mr. Brown is undoubtedly best known for the public service he has given to the people of Ashland, Graton County for eighteen consecutive years, and for the past fourteen years he has been Chairman of the Board. Previous to his assuming this office, he had been Treasurer of Grafton County for six years. He was also a member of the Ashland School Board for twenty-eight successive years. In 1923 he was elected to the State Legislature as Senator and was Chairman of the Financial Committee during that session. In 1926 he was elected to the Governorís council in which capacity he still serves. For many years Mr. Brown has been a member of the Republican State Committee and is likewise the Executive Member for Grafton County. In all matters of civic and political significance he is progressive and instrumental and influential to promoting legislation and policies of district welfare for the community and state. Ora A. Brown married Sarah Addie Cheney who was also born in Ashland, a daughter of Thomas Perkins and Elizabeth (Keyes) Cheney. They are the parents of the following children: 1. Ruth, a graduate of Tilton Seminary and Lucy Wheelock School of Boston and married to Percy R. Lewis, a clerk in Mr. Brownís store. They have a daughter, Virginia. 2. Robert Fletcher, a graduate of the public school and High School of Ashland and of Tilton Seminary. He is connected with his fatherís store and married to Bertha Colby. They have a son, Edward Alden. Mr. and Mrs. Brown reside in Ashland and are communicants of the Baptist Church of that community.
