Virginia Louisiana (Zilafro) Cusic
(1860 October 20, 1923),
nicknamed "Jennie" and "Ludie", was born in Mississippi County, Missouri. She was the daughter of Edward H. and Susan (Stier) Zilafro.

Virginia's earlier records name her as "Virginia" and "Jennie". Her late records refer to her as "Louisiana" and "Ludie" . Her use of these these different names has caused some confusion for researching her history. To add to that confusion, Virginia's last name has been seen as: Zilafro, Zillafro and Zillefrow and a few other variations in spellings. My guess would be that she preferred to be called "Ludie" in her later years. This is the name that appears on two of her daughters death certificates (Annie Davis and Rose Drury) However, another daughter, Rhoda Lee Day has her name as "Susan Louise Zilafro" listed on both her death certificate and obituary. There are several other living and deceased local residents near this area that share the same name, "Zilafro" so it's safe to assume that this is the most accepted spelling of her maiden name.

On February 2, 1881, Virginia married Duncan Cooper in Mississippi County, Missouri. The couple had their first daughter within a year of marriage. On October 1, 1881, Anna Susan Cooper was born in East Prairie, Missouri.

By late 1884, Virginia and Duncan Cooper were expecting a second child. According to living relative's stories, it was during this pregnancy that Duncan Cooper was murdered. Apparently while attending local voting polls, Duncan Cooper's life ended tragically. No further information is available, such as the exact date or location of his death. We do know that the United States Presidential Election was held on Tuesday, November 4, 1884. It is possible that this may have been the voting polls being referred to. Until more information becomes available, Duncan Cooper's fate will remain a mystery as well.

On January 27, 1885, Virginia gave birth to another daughter. Her name was Rhoda Lee Cooper.
