Linda Marie Sundstrom Babb
NEWELL _ Linda Marie Sundstrom Babb, 79, Newell, died Tuesday evening, December 18, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Sturgis.
Visitation will be Friday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel and Saturday one hour prior to the services at the church in Newell.
Funeral services will be Saturday, December 22, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Newell with Rev. Deb Geelsdottir officiating. Burial will follow at Hope Cemetery.
Linda was born February 20, 1922, at Mud Butte, South Dakota, to Carl and Elsie (Johnson) Sundstrom. She was the third in the family of nine children. Riding horseback in the Mud Buttes was one of the family pastimes, and she spent much of her childhood caring for her younger siblings.
She attended the Mud Butte Rural School for eight years.
On October 17, 1939, she married Alvin "Buster" Babb of the Twilight area, and she spent the rest of her life on their ranch 25 miles northeast of Newell. Some of their early married life was spent in a sheep wagon. Linda became a full partner in the ranch operation of raising sheep and cattle.
Despite the hardships of drought, blizzards, prairie fire and rattlesnakes, she loved the ranch life and the livestock. She helped with lambing, haying, milking cows, branding calves and other outdoor tasks, but she still appreciated and wore attractive clothes, jewelry, and makeup. Being an excellent seamstress, she sewed for herself, daughters, and grandchildren.
In 1993, she traveled with her daughters and two granddaughters to visit the childhood homes of her father in Sweden and maternal grandmother in Norway.
Water was often scarce, but she never gave up in her effort to grow trees and flowers. Since her retirement from ranching, she enjoyed tole painting and sharing her works of art with family and friends.
Linda was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway, AARP, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include two daughters, Diana and her husband, Ronald Glover, Rapid City, and Bonnie Lange, Sturgis; one son and his wife, Gary and Lawren Babb who live on the ranch; eight grandchildren, Lissa and Bob Moeller, Ravenna, NE, Liana and Kevin Gordon, Provo, UT, Jim and Bridget Lange, North Platte, NE, Bradley and Gina Babb, Ord, NE, Linda and Jeff Kaiser, Mendota Heights, MN, John and Teresa Glover, Moorhead, MN, Susan Glover, Bayfield, WI, and Bryce Lange, Denver, CO; one step-grandchild, Brett and LynnAnn Day, Midvale, UT; nine great-grandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren.
