Son of William H., Sr. and Dorothy Kerns Steiwer. He attended Fossil Grade School, Shawningan Lake School on Vancouver Island north of Victoria B. C. and Stanford University. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. Following the service, he returned to the family ranch at Fossil. Mr. Steiwer married Ann Carson on July 22, 1955 at Salem. He was a member and past president of the Oregon Sheep Growers Association and was a member of the Wheeler County Stockgrowers Association, B. O. P. E No. 1869, the Fossil Community Club, the University Club of Portland and the Fossil American Legion. He served on the Fossil School District board of directors for 20 years, the Wheeler County ESD board, the Oregon Educational Coordinating Commission and was a past state president to the Oregon School Boards Association. He also served on the Northwest Livestock PCA board of directors, the BLM Advisory Committee and the Oregon Rangeland Committee. Along with his family he was a charter member of the Oregon Country Beef, a beef marketing cooperative. Survivors include his wife Ann, of Fossil; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Tom Campbell of Lonerock; son William H., III of Fossil; and a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Shauna Steiwer of Portland; and five grandchildren. He is proceeded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack.
