John Bruton Carpenter was born in Madison County, Arkansas, to General Morgan Carpenter and Mary Alice Williams. He married Samantha Ellen Short 29 Oct 1879 in Madison County, and they had 10 children of which 7 lived to marry and raise families.

John Bruton farmed during most of his youth, but became a smithy and owned and operated a blacksmith shop on South Main in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma next to the Katy Rail Line. The family home was on the north side of town, a few doors down from the rear of the old Central Elementary School.

He died at 78 years of age of nephritis.
