Fred was born in Muncie, Indiana to John Edgar Crandall and Hazel Glenna Coleman Crandall in 1910. Fred and his cousin Lee Crandall left Toledo, Ohio as very young men, hopping a freight train and rode all the way out to Seattle, Washington.
He married Harriett Lovilia Browning in 1938. They had 2 sons.
Fred was employed by Seattle City Light as a lineman until his retirement. He was a hybridizer of Iris and a judge of the American Iris Society from 1946 till his death. He won many trophies for weight lifting, and was a collector of old guns, particularly muzzle loaders. He was also very much interested in genealogy and tracing his ancestors. Fred died of a heart attack, at the age of 72, while working in his beloved iris garden.
