James Dougherty Smith was the son of John R. and Mary Dougherty Smith. His parents were both born in Pennsylvania and both died in Nebraska.

James served the Union in the Civil War as a waggoner in Co. H, Ohio 12th Calvary. After the war, he moved his family from Ohio to Iowa and later to Nebraska. He was a member of the Nebraska G.A.R. and I.O.O.F. He died at his daughter's home in Hastings, Nebraska in 1923.
