Wally Broeker was born in Yellow Spring Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, the son of William Frederick Broeker (1874-1932) and Marie Elizabeth "Mary" (Taeger) Broeker (1877-1928). The third of five children, his siblings were: Clara Minnie (Broeker) Olague (1901-1986), Albert William Broeker (1907-1930), Ora Marie "LeOra" (Broeker) Palmer (1914-2001), and Orville Louis Broeker (1918-2005).

Wally married Ruth Rebecca Walker (1915-1939) August 12, 1932, at the First Presbyterian Church in Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois. They had two daughters, Beverly and Shirley. Ruth died at age 23 on March 20, 1939, from complications resulting from tuberculosis. For several years, their daughters lived with other family members, siblings of Ruth's family.

Wally remarried February 6, 1941, at Davenport, Iowa, to Ruth Aralene Wheeler (1912-1987), and his children returned to grow up in their father and stepmother's household. Their home was on a farm in Louisa County, Iowa. Wally and his second wife, Ruth, had no children.

Wally died January 17, 1998, at the Wapello Nursing and Rehab Center in Wapello, Iowa.

Wallace E. "Wally" Broeker, 86, of Wapello, formerly of Morning Sun, died Saturday, January 17, 1998, at Wapello Nursing and Care Center.

Born August 5, 1911, near Morning Sun, he was the son of William and Mary Taeger Broeker. He married Ruth R. Walker in August 1932 in Illinois. She died in March 1939. He then married Ruth A. Wheeler in February 1941 in Davenport. She died in March 1987.

Mr. Broeker was a lifelong farmer. He was raised in rural Des Moines County and attended the Rock Bottom country school and graduated from Morning Sun High School.

He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church at Morning Sun, where he served as a trustee for many years. He also served as a trustee for Yellow Spring Township.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Marshall of DeWitt and Shirley Smith of Wapello; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Orville Broeker of Morning Sun; and one sister, Leora Palmer of Columbia, Missouri.

Besides both wives, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister, one granddaughter and one great-grandson.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home at Morning Sun, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Broeker will be will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Presbyterian Church, with the Reverends Jack Edmisson and Jerry Palmer [note: the latter was his nephew] officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun.

A memorial has been established for various community landscape plantings by the family.
