A lawyer and Florida State Senator.
Col. Samuel J. Hilburn (1869-1943), 74, member of the state racing commission and dean of the Putnam County bar died shortly before noon today from a heart attack.
Complaining of feeling poorly, he was taken to Glendale hospital for treatment by his daughter, Mrs. George McReynolds, but despite ministrations died shortly after reaching it.
Born in Gainbesville, Arkansas on May 30, 1869, his early life was passed on an Arkansas farm. Upon completion of a high school education he obtained a teacher’s certificate and taught for three years prior to entering Centenary College, where he won a medal for Oratory. In 1894 he graduated from Cumberland University with the degree of LLB and began the practice of law in this city that year.
He served as city attorney for an 11 year period, and as chairman of the county school board for seven years in addition to being active in all civic and fraternal matters.
He was elected to the house of representatives in 1909, and to the state senate in 1910, from which position he resigned to become a candidate for congress, losing only by the small margin of 384 votes out of 25,000 votes cast. Later Colonel Hilburn was again elected to the state senate in 1933.
In 1911-12 he served as grand chancellor of the Knights of Pythias. He was also a Royal Arch Mason and a charter member of the Palatka Lodge 1232 BPOE.
He was appointed a member of the state racing commission by former Governor Cone and reappointed by Governor Holland.
Although his heart condition was known to be poor it was not considered critical until the fatal seizure.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. George McReynolds, and a grandson, Samuel Hilburn McReynolds of this city. Palatka Daily News, Monday, 27 Sep 1943. Funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at St. James Methodist Church with Rev. W. J. Churchwell officiating. Burial will be made in West View Cemetery with Masonic Rites at the grave.
Members of Palatka Lodge 1232 BPOE will attend the rites in a body, it was announced. (Palatka Daily News Obituary dtd Tuesday, 28 Sep 1943.)
