Marie Kathleen McGill's family immigrated to the United States from Scotland. Her family moved to Cherry Illinois where her father and brothers were to work in the Coal Mine. The family had only been in the country a few months when the terrible Cherry coal mine disaster took place in 1909. Marie was only an infant at the time she lost her father and brothers in the disaster. It is not sure what happened to Marie's family, but it is possible that Marie was partially raised by nuns who assisted the town after the disaster which struck almost every home. Marie never really shared much about her childhood with her children so not much is known. Through much research I have located many records on her some say born in Scotland, some say born at Sea and her obituary states born in Cherry, Illinois. If she was born here in the states it was as soon as they arrived. My belief is she was born at Sea. Marie first married Lea Davis and had the following children: Richard Anthony Davis, Clara Marie Davis who died at 2 months, Delores Maxine Davis,Walter Lee Davis, Ruth Porter Davis who died at age 2 months & an unamed infant that died at birth. Marie later married William Blackburn. Marie loved her grandchildren very much and took great care of them while their mother was at work. My mother Kathleen Marie was named after her grandmother. She is always making reference to her grandmother Marie about how much she loved her and learned from her. Unfortunately, Marie suffered a bad stroke and later died on February 20, 1972 before the mystery of her childhood was ever really talked about. She is buried at Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island, Illinois.
